Costa Rica San Isidro 48 Natural is a varietal with its own identity, grown by Mela Gamboa in Mela's Garden at Finca Las Mercedes in Tarrazú. It comes from the same Sarchimor line as Obata, but San Isidro 48 was selected, grown, and named on Costa Rican soil instead of being bred abroad. Grown at 1,800 meters and naturally processed on raised beds under the sun, it's a smooth, balanced cup with ripe blackberry, crisp green apple, and a sweet hazelnut finish.

San Isidro 48: Same Family, Different Path
San Isidro 48 shares its roots with Obata. Both descend from Sarchimor, a cross of the disease-resistant Timor Hybrid and Costa Rica's Villa Sarchi. Obata was refined in Brazil, while San Isidro 48 was chosen and named locally in Costa Rica. Family line: Timor Hybrid × Villa Sarchi → Sarchimor → San Isidro 48.
A Long-Term Bet on Resilience
Mela planted San Isidro 48 about 14 years ago, alongside Obata, looking for varieties with stronger disease resistance and better productivity. With the climate changing, she wanted to diversify Finca Las Mercedes with coffees that could adapt and still keep production and quality high. More than a decade later, San Isidro 48 is part of her plan for a more resilient, sustainable farm.
Grown Among Fruit Trees, Dried in the Sun
At 1,800 meters, San Isidro 48 grows in a regenerative, shade-grown system among avocado, citrus, guava, plantain and banana trees. As with every Mela's Garden lot, it's processed natural and dried slowly and completely in the sun on African raised beds. That builds its nutty sweetness and brings out the bright fruit underneath.
