This National Coffee Day, we’re sharing a collection that brings our family’s coffee story back to Costa Rica.
Long before Volcanica Coffee had a name, our mother and grandfather helped harvest coffee in Costa Rica’s volcanic mountains. That connection has stayed with us. As a family-owned roaster, we’ve always looked for coffees that invite you to learn where they came from—and whose hands brought them to harvest.
In 2020, a farm visit led us to Finca Las Mercedes and the work of Mela Gamboa. The Gamboa family’s roots on the estate stretch back more than a century, and Mela continues to tend it with her family today. We were drawn to the care behind the coffee and to a farm story that, in its own way, echoed ours: one generation passing its knowledge and love of coffee to the next.
Mela’s Garden brings together five coffees from Finca Las Mercedes: San Isidro 48, Villasarchi, Pacamara, Bourbon Amarillo, and Obata. Each offers a different way to explore what Mela and her family grow. We’re proud to share their work with you, and we hope this collection gives you a reason to slow down, brew something new, and get to know the farm behind your cup.

Costa Rica San Isidro 48 Natural is a varietal with its own identity, grown by Mela Gamboa in Mela's Garden at Finca Las Mercedes in Tarrazú. It comes from the same Sarchimor line as Obata, but San Isidro 48 was selected, grown, and named on Costa Rican soil instead of being bred abroad.

Costa Rica Yellow Bourbon Natural, also called Bourbon Amarillo, is one of the rarest lots in Mela's Garden at Finca Las Mercedes in Tarrazú. Yellow Bourbon is a natural mutation of Bourbon, one of coffee's oldest varietals, and its cherries ripen gold instead of red.

Costa Rica Pacamara Natural is a small-lot coffee from Mela's Garden at Finca Las Mercedes in Tarrazú, grown by Mela Gamboa at 1,800 meters. Pacamara is coffee's boldest varietal.

Costa Rica Obata Natural is a microlot from Mela's Garden, the varietal program at Mela Gamboa's Finca Las Mercedes in Tarrazú. Obata was bred in Brazil from a Timor Hybrid and Costa Rica's own Villa Sarchi, so this is a coffee with Costa Rican roots that traveled abroad and came home.
