International Women's Day with Rebecca Atienza

by Aaron Contreras 07 Mar 2023 0 Comments

As we celebrate International Women's Day, it is important to recognize the vital role of women in the coffee industry. Female coffee producers have played a significant role in the growth and success of the specialty coffee industry. One such woman is Rebecca Atienza, daughter of Roberto Atienza, owner of Hacienda San Pedro, one of the last standing specialty coffee micromills in Puerto Rico. We found Rebecca in 2021 during our origin trip to Puerto Rico and have been partners ever since. Click here to purchase

Rebecca Atienza is a passionate coffee producer who grew up on Hacienda San Pedro, where she was exposed to the coffee industry at a young age. Her father, Roberto Atienza, has been in the coffee industry for over 50 years, and he instilled in her a love and appreciation for coffee.

After studying environmental science and agriculture in college, Rebecca returned to the family farm to take on a more active role in the business. She quickly proved herself to be a valuable member of the team, and her father entrusted her with managing the micromill.

Rebecca is a hands-on micromill manager who oversees every aspect of the coffee production process, from planting and harvesting to processing and roasting. She is committed to producing high-quality specialty coffee that is sustainably and ethically sourced.

One of Rebecca's biggest challenges has been weathering the devastation caused by Hurricane Maria, which hit Puerto Rico in 2017. The hurricane destroyed much of the island's coffee crop, and Hacienda San Pedro was no exception. However, Rebecca and her team persevered, and they were able to rebuild and produce coffee once again.

Despite the challenges she has faced, Rebecca remains committed to producing exceptional coffee and promoting sustainable agriculture. She is proud to be a female coffee producer in a male-dominated industry, and she hopes to inspire other women to pursue careers in coffee.

In recognition of her contributions to the specialty coffee industry, Rebecca has received numerous awards and honors, including the prestigious "Coffee of the Year" award at the 2020 Puerto Rico Coffee Expo.

Rebecca Atienza is a shining example of the important role that women play in the coffee industry. As we celebrate International Women's Day, let us remember and honor the many women who are working hard to produce high-quality, sustainable, and ethically sourced coffee around the world
