Bolivia Coffee History

There’s not a whole lot of information on the specifics of when coffee was first introduced to Bolivia. But coffee is believed to have first made its way to Bolivia sometime in the late 18th and early 19th century when it was still a Spanish colony. Post-colonialism, once Bolivia achieved independence in 1825, though, seems to be around the time that Bolivian coffee really took off, becoming a major crop in the country by the 1880’s.

Coffee production was relatively stagnant at the introduction of the crop until around 1920’s when agricultural infrastructure began to take root and create a bustling ecology for coffee growth within Bolivia. In the 1960’s when the Bolivian government started to give back land to indigenous farmers, coffee further proliferated through parts of the country that had previously not been farmed.

Bolivia has, unfortunately, dealt with extreme fluctuations in the price of coffee, which has cyclically led to many farmers ditching growing coffee in favor of crops that are slightly more stable and consistent, such as coca.

Various other countries, including the US, have recently invested heavily in helping develop the infrastructure of Bolivia’s coffee production by funding the construction of washing stations and other education programs in an effort to curb the production of coca plants.

While Bolivia isn’t the powerhouse of coffee production as its neighbors, Brazil and Colombia, it has steadily and increasingly been improving its coffee year after year. With much of Bolivia’s coffee cultivation coming from smallholder farms, we continue to see great and wonderful cups coming out of the country.
