The Origin of Sulawesi Coffee Beans

Sulawesi Coffee is also known as Celebes Kalossi Coffee or Sulawesi Toraja Coffee. This unique and distinct coffee originates from the Sesean Mountains of Sulawesi. Celebes is mountainous island located in Sulawesi, Indonesia and largely populated by colorful indigenous people known as Toraja. Sulawesi was previously known as Celebes during the Portuguese reign and the name is still used commonly referred to today. It is a belief among the locals that their forefathers “descended onto a mountaintop from heaven long ago”. It is clear that this place is like no other. This place displays a unique culture, fascinating traditions and amazing landscapes.

These qualities are common to the Sulawesi and are translated to the coffee produced from this region. This region is famously reckoned to produce the highest quality coffees. As it is available only in limited quantities per year, the Sulawesi range is highly prized and well-sought in different countries around the world.

The Growth Process of Sulawesi or Celebes Kalossi Coffee

The beans are grown in small quantities to give it a unique taste and flavor. They are not grown on commercial plots which produce mass offering but also bland-flavored beans. Instead, they are grown in backyards or small family plots. This ensures that our coffees have a distinct, vital flavor which is almost impossible to replicate. They are also cultivated and harvested the traditional way, similar to the practices of more ancient times.

The Sulawesi Coffee Flavor

Complex and earthy in taste, it is low in acidity and possesses full bodied, deep flavors. It is less rich and less heavy compared to Sumatran Coffee, but is more vibrant and lively in flavor. Sulawesi Coffee can be distinguished by its deep flavors and the distinct taste of maple-syrup in its body. While Sumatran Coffee possesses an earthy, pungent and exotic flavor; the taste of coffee from Sulawesi counterparts produces a lighter, multi-dimensional taste. The flavors uniquely reveal themselves layer by layer and what you will experience is a complex flavor beyond description of words. It also produces a mellow aftertaste, which lingers long after the coffee is gone. It is often said that to try this coffee is akin to taking on a journey- that description accurately describes what you can expect to experience on a cup of freshly brewed coffee from the Sulawesi region.

Importance of Buying Genuine Sulawesi Coffees from a Reputable Source

The range of Sulawesi coffees used to be strictly grown in the mountains. Kalossi (a small town in Sulawesi) functioned as the collection point for all the coffee from the area. However, a number of years ago a range of less superior coffees emerged from the southern part of the same region. Cultivated in Malakaji Mountains, the growing conditions offered by this area vary distinctly from the original plantation sites.

Theft is also a persistent problem in this area, where ripe and unripe cherries were stripped off the trees. There is no obvious difference in physical appearance after processing but a huge difference in flavor and taste. As a result, the coffee from the lower grade beans tastes differently and there is a marked deterioration in quality compared to the original beans from Sesean Mountains. The Volcanica Sulawesi Coffee is of the highest grade. The first picks and ripe coffee beans especially those from Toraja area are sold at higher prices, while the rest is conveniently mixed with inferior beans to be sold at much lower prices. Therefore, the market today consists of the first pick beans, as well as a range of mixture beans. To avoid the problem of wrongful purchase, ensure that you buy your Sulawesi Coffee beans from a reputable company. Only reputable companies will ensure that you receive the best beans and genuinely produced coffees. Enjoying a cup of freshly brewed Sulawesi Coffee is a delight to many, especially coffee connoisseurs.
